GAUTENG — The case of the Tembisa South rapist sentenced to life imprisonment has officially concluded, bringing a definitive close to a harrowing 2022 assault involving a minor. The conviction underscores the judicial system’s ongoing commitment to holding perpetrators of gender-based violence (GBV) fully accountable under the law.
The tragic events at the center of the case unfolded on 20 September 2022, in the Welamlambo Section of Tembisa South. According to court details, a 12-year-old girl was routinely asked by her neighbor to buy cigarettes for him. On the day of the assault, after the young victim delivered the cigarettes, the accused dragged her into his room, locked the door, and raped her twice. The survivor later noted that she was unable to scream for help because the yard was completely empty at the time.
Following the attack, the victim confided in her friends, one of whom subsequently alerted her parents. The family promptly reported the incident, and the case was officially registered at the Tembisa South South African Police Service (SAPS).
The investigation was allocated to Detective Warrant Officer Kolobe Amia Kwenaite, a dedicated member of the Tembisa Family Violence, Child Protection Services, and Sexual Offences Unit. Through a thorough and meticulous investigation, Detective Kwenaite successfully gathered the necessary evidence to arrest the suspect and build a solid, prosecutable case.
The accused, 47-year-old Philani Gatsheni Ndlovu, was ultimately found guilty by the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on 3 July 2026. Recognizing the severity of the crime, the court handed down a sentence of life imprisonment for rape.
