A joint crime prevention operation between the South African Police Service and their Metro police counterpart ensured that one hijacker is removed from our streets.

The SAPS and Metro police embarked on an intelligence driven operation on Friday, 26 January 2018, in the evening. During the operation the police received information that a blue Audi A5 has been hijacked in Sunnyside.

All the patrol vehicles in the area were alerted.

Few minutes after the look out was given, the said vehicle was spotted being driven recklessly by the suspect at section Q Mamelodi. The Metro police gave chase and managed to stop the hijacked vehicle. One suspect was arrested on the scene and a fire arm suspected to have been used during the hijacking was recovered.

The investigation is continuing and the firearm will be sent to the Forensic lab to determine if it was not previously used in the commission of crime elsewhere.

Meanwhile the suspect will appear in the Mamelodi magistrate court on charges of possession of suspected hijacked vehicle and illegal possession of a firearm.
