SUNNYSIDE – A coordinated law enforcement operation culminating in a dramatic Sunnyside high-speed chase has resulted in the arrest of two suspects linked to an attempted theft out of a motor vehicle. The incident, which unfolded on Friday, 23 October 2026, highlights ongoing collaborative efforts between local police and community security partners to combat vehicle-related crimes in the area.

At approximately 10:50, a joint task team comprising South African Police Service (SAPS) members, the Hatfield Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and VumaCam operatives spotted a white Honda Jazz. The vehicle was actively wanted in connection with the reported attempted theft. Upon being identified by the task team, the occupants initiated a high-speed pursuit through the area before eventually abandoning the vehicle and fleeing the scene on foot.

While two suspects were successfully apprehended during the foot pursuit, the driver managed to evade capture and escape. The white Honda Jazz was immediately confiscated and impounded by authorities to aid the ongoing investigation. The two arrested individuals are now facing charges of attempted theft out of a motor vehicle and are scheduled to make their first appearance at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Colonel MJ Steenkamp, the Acting Station Commander of Sunnyside, praised the collaborative effort that led to the successful interceptions. He commended the SAPS members and all stakeholders involved for their excellent teamwork and cooperation, which directly led to the arrests.

Colonel Steenkamp noted that investigations are actively continuing to determine if the apprehended suspects can be linked to other criminal activities, and a manhunt is underway to trace the outstanding driver.

In light of the incident, the Acting Station Commander issued a strong public advisory to the local community. He urged Sunnyside residents to remain vigilant and strictly avoid leaving valuables in plain sight inside their parked vehicles. Motorists are strongly advised to lock all valuable items securely in the boot of their cars to significantly reduce the risk of becoming a target for opportunistic thieves.
