GAUTENG — A 24-year-old man has received a 10-year direct prison sentence for a brazen Springs armed robbery and subsequent money laundering scheme, marking a significant victory for law enforcement against financially motivated offenses. The conviction stems from a terrifying September 2025 incident where a local resident was hijacked and coerced into transferring funds from his mobile banking application.

The ordeal began when a 41-year-old African male parked his vehicle outside a shop in the Dalfoche area. As he alighted from his car, two armed suspects ambushed him, ordering the victim back into the driver’s seat at gunpoint.

Once in control of the vehicle, the assailants confiscated the victim’s cellphones and intimidated him into revealing his security passwords. Using the unlocked devices, the criminals accessed his mobile banking app and executed an unauthorized transfer of R61,000.00 into an external bank account before fleeing the scene.

Police spokesperson and lead investigator Sgt Raymond Mogashoa launched a meticulous probe into the hijacking and digital theft. The rigorous investigative work quickly led authorities to one of the primary suspects, identified as 24-year-old Thabiso Sniper Makeke, who was subsequently arrested and formally charged in connection with the incident.

Makeke appeared before the court where he was handed a 10-year direct imprisonment sentence. Law enforcement officials noted that the successful investigation and conviction serve as a strong warning to criminals, underscoring the South African Police Service’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that perpetrators of serious, financially driven offenses face the full might of the justice system.
