PRETORIA, Gauteng — The South African government has expressed profound sorrow following the tragic death of a Malawian national during a cross-border repatriation operation. In an official statement released on Tuesday, the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on Migration extended heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family, as well as the government and citizens of Malawi.

According to preliminary reports, the deceased was traveling as a passenger on a bus destined for Malawi. The vehicle had been fully loaded and departed from a local repatriation processing center when the incident occurred.

Approximately 10 kilometers from the facility, the passenger tragically passed away. Recognizing the emergency, the bus driver immediately turned the vehicle around, returning to the processing center.

Upon the bus’s arrival back at the facility, the South African Police Service (SAPS) was promptly summoned to the scene. Law enforcement officers initiated mandatory protocols for sudden and unexplained deaths, which included a thorough forensic examination in line with standard operating procedures.

Authorities have moved to reassure the public, the grieving family, and Malawian officials that all necessary processes were executed with the highest level of professionalism, dignity, and respect for the departed.

Following the conclusion of the police and forensic investigations, SAPS formally released the vehicle. The bus departed the processing center at midnight, enabling the remaining passengers to safely continue their journey back home.

The South African government confirmed that a comprehensive briefing regarding the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident will be communicated to Malawian authorities through the appropriate diplomatic channels.

Pretoria has also pledged its full cooperation and stands ready to provide any necessary support to assist the family of the deceased during this difficult time, reiterating its deepest sympathies to the nation of Malawi.
