Six paramedics from the Johannesburg emergency services were robbed of their belongings at gunpoint while attending to a patient in Jeppestown, the City of Johannesburg said on Monday.
The paramedics had responded to a stabbing incident in the CBD at around 4am on Sunday and were treating a patient inside the ambulance when two armed men pointed a firearm at them.
“They demanded their belongings including wallets and cellphones. The robbers also took a medical bag and a two-way radio, they set the radio alight at a nearby field and ran away on foot,” the city said.
The paramedics were unharmed.
The city said there had been a spate of robberies targeting paramedics while they were out attending to patients in communities.
“We condemn this barbaric behaviour by criminals and urge communities in the city of Johannesburg to protect emergency services personnel while they save lives.”
