More than 300 hundred security guards have held a peaceful march on Church Square where they handed over their demands to the Tshwane Council.

They are demanding a monthly salary of R10 000 and permanent appointments.

It follows from allegations that the city council will pay off more than three thousand guards and replace them with Tshwane Metro Police recruits.

According to the council’s offices, private security firms cost the board more than R200 million a year.

The question has already been asked why city councils are being protected. If law and order are strictly enforced and protest marches, which usually end violently resulting in damage to property, are prohibited, the council offices will no longer need to be guarded, and more money can be saved.
