School children injured in an explosion at Pretoria quarry

Fourteen people were injured, six critically, on Thursday afternoon after a blasting demonstration went wrong at a quarry in Pretoria during a school visit, EMER-G-MED said.

“This afternoon just after 2pm, EMER-G-MED as well as Netcare911 dispatched multiple resources to reports of a mining accident at a quarry, just north of Pretoria,” EMER-G-MED said in a statement.

“It’s believed that a class of school children were on a visit to the quarry when a blasting demonstration went wrong, resulting in 14 people, including some of the children, sustaining injuries ranging from minor to serious.”

EMER-G-MED said six of the injured required Advanced Life Support interventions due to the nature of their injuries.

“Paramedics worked effortlessly to triage and stabilise the patients, before they they were transported to various Netcare hospitals in Pretoria.”
