PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA — The South African Police Service (SAPS) and the private security industry have solidified their partnership ahead of the planned 30 June protests. Acting National Police Commissioner Puleng Dimpane confirmed that joint operations are actively in place, with authorities fully prepared to respond to any eventuality. This strategic collaboration aims to strengthen public safety and ensure highly coordinated responses during the anticipated anti-illegal immigration demonstrations.

The unified security front comes as the country remains mindful of the devastating July 2021 unrest. The riots and looting during that period resulted in more than 300 fatalities and inflicted an estimated 50 billion rand in damages on the South African economy. Because of the events in 2021, some members of the public still view the private security sector with suspicion. Concerns have been raised regarding law enforcement working alongside private firms, specifically fears that some companies employ foreign nationals who might not exercise proper restraint during volatile situations.

Addressing these public concerns, Wahl Bartmann, CEO of the Fidelity Services Group, clarified his company’s operational standards. Speaking on the matter, Bartmann stated definitively that his company does not employ any foreign nationals. He further noted that the regulatory body governing the industry is actively working to clean up the sector, ensuring that only reputable companies are providing services and supporting their local communities.

Bartmann emphasized that the security sector has taken significant lessons away from the 2021 riots. He explained that private security firms and SAPS are now planning together extensively to anticipate potential challenges. By collaborating closely and preparing for any scenario, the joint task force aims to ensure the upcoming security operations are a success.
