The Road Traffic Management Corporation on Wednesday condemned the assault of senior traffic officer outside Dunnottar Primary School in Nigel.

The incident took place on Monday after the officer tried to issue a traffic fine to a man who had parked his vehicle on the wrong side of the road.

In a video doing rounds on social media, the unknown man is seen shoving the officer to the ground and then dragging him, while pupils and parents cheered him on.

RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane said they believed the man is the parent at the school.

“We hope that the courts will deal harshly with this man to send a clear message that law enforcement officers are not to be impedes or undermined in any manner during their execution duties,” Zwane said.

“It is also most disturbing to note some members of the public looked on and others cheered while the incident happened.”

Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department spokesperson Clifford Shongwe said the man is expected to appear in court on September 8.

He said they the man could not be named due to the nature of the case.
