On Wednesday 11 September 2019, at about 11:30, Benoni Crime Prevention members were on their daily patrol duties around N12 freeway. They received information about two suspects who crossed the freeway minutes ago of which one of them was in possession of a firearm.
Members followed up on the information and went to investigate. The suspects were indeed spotted in the bushes next to Danie Taljaard Park.
Members applied their tactics and the suspects tried to corner one of the members and pointed him with a firearm, the member acted accordingly and fatally wounded the suspect who pointed him with the firearm. The second suspect disappeared and evaded arrest.
Paramedics were summoned and certified the suspect dead on the scene and a firearm was seized. Further investigation revealed the firearm was robbed from the lawful owner during a robbery that took place on 23 July 2019, at Snake Road not far from where the incident happened.
A case of pointing and possession of unlawful firearm and ammunition is under investigation at Benoni SAPS.
