Robbery suspect arrested by victim

A 42-year-old man was arrested after the man he had allegedly attacked and robbed managed to apprehend him before an arrest was made, Gauteng police said on Monday.

Johannesburg Central police’s Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said the incident took place on Sunday at about lunchtime, on the corner of Delvers and President Street. “It is alleged that six suspects robbed a 36-year-old male at the above mentioned streets on the 12th of June 2016. [The] victim was sitting inside his car waiting for his partner. Six suspects surrounded his vehicle and they damaged his window with a brick.”

One of the suspects – allegedly the man arrested – choked the victim while his accomplices searched the victim, eventually taking his money and cellphone before they fled the scene.

The victim managed to grab the suspect who was choking him and held onto him until Johannesburg Central police arrived to make their arrest.

“Five suspects are still at large with the belongings of the victim,” said Mbele, adding that police were continuing their investigation into the matter.

The suspect would appear soon in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.
