A community protest in Ebony Park over a severe and ongoing water crisis was suspended Tuesday evening after a tense and ultimately fruitless meeting between frustrated residents and a municipal official.

The protest was organized by residents who have been suffering from sporadic water cuts, a situation the city refers to as “water throttling.” The community’s frustration culminated in a demonstration, for which they had obtained a permit, with the hope of receiving answers from the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Water.

The meeting, however, was described as “very unsuccessful.” According to reports from the scene, residents were expecting a clear timeline for the restoration of consistent water supply but instead were told the throttling was “unavoidable.”

The MMC attempted to explain that the measure was due to critically high water demand outstripping the available supply. This explanation was met with anger and disappointment from the crowd, who demanded specific dates and hours for when the water would return.

The situation grew so tense that police officers were forced to escort the MMC away from the area for his own safety.

A community leader, Cedric, expressed the collective disappointment. “We were not happy… the answer that we were looking for [was] just the issue of water to come back,” he said. “As we speak, we don’t have water… The reality is we are not happy about the response. It is painful.”

He confirmed that the protest was suspended as the permit only covered Tuesday. While the demonstrations have paused for now, Cedric made it clear that “the struggle continues,” hinting that further action may be planned.

The water crisis is having a profound impact on daily life in Ebony Park. Residents reported that school children are being sent home as early as 10:00 a.m. because there is no water at educational facilities. The lack of water is also creating unhygienic living conditions, preventing people from performing basic tasks. The elderly are particularly affected, forced to carry buckets to search for water. The supply, when it is available, only returns in the evenings.

Compounding the issue, many residents have recently received SMS threats to cut off their water entirely over alleged unpaid bills. One elderly resident displayed an SMS claiming she owed R300,000 on her municipal bill, an amount she insists is inaccurate as she regularly pays for her water.

The community, which is also struggling with electricity issues, had held significant hope that the MMC would address their multifaceted problems. With those hopes unmet and the water throttling set to continue, the situation in Ebony Park remains unresolved and tense.
