Rea Vaya bus operations were brought to a stand still on Tuesday morning after drivers downed tools over a number of grievances they said their employer was failing to address.

A bus driver, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said drivers were not on strike, but had simply downed tools because their employer was ignoring various demands made in a memorandum they presented earlier.

The City of Johannesburg said it would engage with Piotrans and Litsamaiso – the companies that run the buses – to establish the cause of the service disruption.

Rea Vaya spokesperson Benny Makgoga said: “The City of Johannesburg has been informed by the Piotrans and Litsamaiso (companies that manages Rea Vaya buses) that there is an illegal work stoppage by bus drivers this morning.”

Rea Vaya, which has been running between the Johannesburg central business district (CBD) and Soweto since March 2014, transports thousands of commuters every day.

“We will provide regular feedback to passengers and the public through the media, our facebook and twitter on developments regarding the service,” Makgoga said.

“The City apologies for the inconvenience caused by the disruptions of Rea Vaya BRT services.”

Commuters have taken to social media to express their disappointment and concern.
