A 68-year-old male accused was found guilty for rape and sentenced to life imprisonment in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on 2 March 2020. His name will be entered in the Register of Sexual Offenders.

It is alleged that the accused raped an 11-year-old girl at Bassonia on 10 December 2018 at 21:00. He was visiting the uncle of the victim; the uncle left them watching television and went to take a bath.

The accused grabbed the victim to the toilet where he raped her. The victim was rescued by her uncle inside the toilet where the accused was found.

The man was apprehended by Mondeor police on 11 December 2018 at his hideout in the bushes.

This harsh conviction is a result of the sterling work by Investigating Officer, Sergeant Baloyi of the SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses Unit.

We trust this sentence will deter individuals from committing crimes against women and children.
