A joint police investigation by the Hawks’ South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau (SANEB) and Crime Intelligence (Counter Narcotics) has resulted in the seizure of 29 kilograms of heroin worth more than R6 million.

The drug bust which was effected on Tuesday 19 June 2018, also led to the arrest of three suspects aged between 53 and 41.

The several month long investigation kick started in 2017 targeting drug traffickers in the Gauteng area. An undercover operation was set up on Tuesday this week where the target agreed to supply heroin. The target brought 29 kilograms of heroin and after the purchase, the dealer and his driver were immediately arrested.

Further investigations led to the arrest of the third suspect who is alleged to have been in constant contact with the two suspects. The suspects whose names cannot be divulged pending the probe appeared briefly on Thursday at the Randburg Regional Court.

They have been remanded in custody until their next appearance on 28 June 2018.

The National Head of the Hawks Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya praised the collaboration between the police agencies.

“We are prioritizing dealing with major drug kingpins and we are very excited on this outstanding success,” said Lieutenant General Lebeya.
