JOHANNESBURG, Gauteng — A massive R200 million cocaine seizure at OR Tambo International Airport has highlighted the relentless efforts of South African law enforcement to dismantle illicit drug trafficking networks, Acting National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, confirmed.

The significant bust involved two separate interdictions at the country’s major international entry point. In the first incident, authorities intercepted two large travel suitcases at the airport terminal containing blocks of suspected cocaine weighing approximately 84 kg. In a separate operation at the airport’s cargo section, officials seized four boxes containing roughly 250 kg of suspected cocaine, which had been tightly packed into 220 individual blocks.

The combined estimated street value of the confiscated narcotics exceeds R200 million. Authorities noted that no arrests have been made at this stage as active investigations continue.

Lieutenant General Dimpane commended the multidisciplinary team for their vigilance and sustained commitment to disrupting the flow of illegal substances through the country’s primary travel hub.

“The vigilance of our members at this strategic port of entry ought to be commended,” Lieutenant General Dimpane stated. “On a monthly basis, we continue to intercept large quantities of drugs and disrupt the activities of drug mules. These successes send a strong message that we will not allow South Africa to be used as a transit point or market for illicit drugs.”

Reaffirming the South African Police Service’s dedication to national border security, the Acting National Commissioner emphasized that law enforcement agencies will continue working closely with other domestic and international partners to detect, intercept, and dismantle sophisticated drug trafficking networks operating across the region.
