Firefighters successfully extinguished a blaze at the Home Affairs building in Germiston on Wednesday after protesters allegedly set the structure alight. The fire is believed to have been sparked by petrol bombs found inside the building, according to Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services.

Protest Linked to Evictions

The unrest stems from ongoing tensions over recent evictions from flats in the area. Protesters are demanding to be allowed back into their homes without paying rent. Authorities reported that roads were barricaded early Wednesday morning to obstruct the sheriff and law enforcement from carrying out an eviction order.

During the chaos, stones were thrown at private vehicles, and property was damaged. A group of protesters then moved to the Home Affairs building, where the fire broke out.

Arrests and Charges

Police arrested two individuals, while others fled the scene. Charges of public violence, arson, and malicious damage to state property have been opened.

Damage Assessment

Disaster management officials confirmed that the fire primarily damaged the first floor, which housed administrative and immigration services. The ground floor, where clients apply for Smart ID cards and passports, suffered water damage but no fire damage. Critical documents were reportedly secured in locked storage.

However, late birth registration documents were affected by water, and affected clients will need to resubmit their applications.

Business Continuity Plans

Home Affairs officials assured the public that mobile units would be deployed to Alberton and Boksburg offices to assist affected clients while the Germiston branch remains under assessment.

No casualties were reported in the incident. Investigations are ongoing.
