On Friday, 2 February 2018, the FF Plus leader in Gauteng, Jaco Mulder, addressed a request in writing to the Emfuleni Mayor, Mr Jacob Khawe, asking the city council not to permit any more protest actions at schools in the area, specifically with reference to Hoërskool Overvaal in Vereeniging.

The written request was made after it came to light that applications for further protest actions on Monday the 5th February 2018 at Hoërskool Overvaal were expected.

In the letter, Mulder referred to the relevant legislation, including the South African Schools Act 84 of 1996, the Children’s Act 38 of 2005 and the Regulation of Gatherings Act 205 of 1993, that specifically regulate political activities at schools, the safety of children and learners and public meetings.

“The transgression of the said legislation has serious consequences and the Emfuleni city council will have to accept responsibility for any negative incidences that result from the protest actions for which the council granted permission,” says Mulder.
