Protest action ongoing in the Vereeniging area. The R82 and R59 are no go areas! Stay away from these roads, especially the Waldrift area of Vereeniging. There are major riots, demonstrators throwing rocks and stones and a report that petrol bombs are thrown at cars.
It seems as though the protests are springing up everyday all around South Africa. Apparently this protest is about the installation of the electricity smart meters. Probably rioting because they will have to now pay for electricity.
There have been several protests happening all over the country since the beginning of the year. Some of the protests are not as damaging as others however, all the protests do come with a degree of damage to infrastructure. Since the start of the protests, it would seem as though everybody wants to have their day of destruction. The demonstrators do not realize that the damage caused from the destructive behavior will never be repaired or replaced.
Drivers are urged to use alternative routes in and out of areas surrounding Sonlandpark, Unitas Park, Arconpark and Waldrift as the ‘Smart meter’ protest continues today. All roads have been closed.
