The Pretoria Deeds Office has been thrown into chaos after thousands of documents, including digital backups, have just disappeared.
The issue is specifically about deeds and transactions that took place in 2007, including marriage contracts, title deeds, mortgage lending, trusts and many other documents. A malfunction is indicated as the cause of the problems, with power failures due to load capacity have apparently destroyed the electronic data.
However, many physical copies disappeared, and no one can explain how it happened.
The Deeds Offices fall under the already controversial Department of Rural Development and Land Reform. The department is currently silent about the mess in all eleven languages.
