Bonginkosi Daniel Sithole (39), was arrested on Friday, 7 October 2022, and charged for illegal possession of gold bearing material after he attempted to flee.

Members from the Johannesburg Serious Organised Crime Investigation with assistance from metro police and private securities responded to a tip-off that a vehicle driven by Sithole had gold in transit along the N12.

The gold was reportedly on its way to be sold.

The vehicle a VW Polo hatchback was spotted driving towards Potchefstroom near Fochville Engen garage. It was intercepted but not before it tried to speed away.

The driver lost control, vehicle came to a halt at Wedela turn off.

The resultant search uncovered gold bearing materials in a small container and transaction registers with gold weights and names of suspected illegal miners.

Preliminary investigation led the team to three of Sithole’ houses but the search yielded no further results.

On Tuesday the Fochville Magistrate’s Court remanded the case to January 23 January 2023, pending further investigation. Sithole was however granted R5000-00 bail.
