Johannesburg Central police on Wednesday urged community to help in investigating several cases where firearms were used in the robberies in Joburg Central.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said motorists have been robbed when the robots were red during peak hours, while members of the public have also been robbed while walking on the street. There have also been several reports of businesses being robbed.

According to Mbele, the suspects used firearms during these robbery incidents.

Mbele said police operations had resulted in the recovery of several firearms and a number of suspects arrested, but warned that there were still more firearms in circulation and the the threat remained.

“Police do random operations, stop and search. Our investigation reveal that there are still many firearms in circulation around Johannesburg Central CBD.

“Therefore, we are urging the community to come forward and give police information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects, by so doing we will be saving innocent lives.

“Working together between the police and the community can reduce the increase of crime where firearms are being used around the CBD,” said Mbele.

Anyone who has information that might help the police to arrest the suspects were urged to contact Johannesburg Central Crime office in 011 497 7240.
