Police sergeant arrested for kidnapping, armed robbery and extortion

A police sergeant was arrested on 10 November 2021 on allegations of kidnapping, armed robbery and extortion. The member was arrested following a warrant of arrest issued by Vereeniging Court.

It is alleged that the member hired out his police equipment, including official firearm, bulletproof vest and hand cuffs to a group of an online syndicate that use these equipment to impersonate police officials.

The suspects reportedly preyed on people who advertised their property online, they would thereafter rob and keep them hostage at a certain house in Orange Farm.

Another search and seizure warrant was executed and resulted in the arrest of a 40-year-old man and seizure of police reflector jackets, a diamond tester and five cellphones.

These arrests follows intensive efforts by investigators to crack cases where perpetrators impersonate police officers. These suspects will be profiled to determine if they cannot be linked to other cases where the same modus operandi was used to rob unsuspecting victims that sell their property online.

Both suspects are expected to appear in Vereeniging Magistrates’ Court on 11 November 2021.

The Provincial Commissioner of Gauteng Province, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela has welcomed the arrest and commended the team working on this case. “It is a disgrace to see one of our own being arrested for criminal activities that they were entrusted to fight but instead they became perpetrators. As the management in SAPS Gauteng we are committed to uprooting the rotten potatoes within the organisation and to ensure that justice is served”, said Lt Gen Mawela.
