The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng has launched a manhunt for suspects following a mass shooting that left 12 people dead and at least nine others injured at the Jumpers Informal Settlement in Cleveland on Tuesday evening, June 9, 2026.

At approximately 23:10, SAPS members responded to reports of a shooting in progress at the informal settlement. Upon arrival, officers discovered numerous individuals suffering from gunshot wounds and immediately summoned Emergency Medical Services to assist the injured.

Preliminary investigations confirm that 12 people were killed in the attack. Eight adult males and three adult females were pronounced dead at the scene, while one additional male victim later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital. At least nine other victims were transported to various medical facilities for the treatment of gunshot wounds.

Authorities allege that a group of more than 10 suspects was dropped off near a petrol station in Cleveland by a white Toyota Quantum. The suspects reportedly entered the informal settlement through both of its entrances, moving through the area and opening fire on residents and community members at multiple locations before fleeing the scene in the same vehicle.

Provincial and district detectives, supported by crime intelligence units and forensic experts, have been mobilized to investigate the incident and track down the suspects. The motive for the attack remains unknown and is the subject of an ongoing investigation. No arrests have been made at this stage.
