A swift response by police officers thwarted an attempted hijacking on the M10 road in the Cullinan policing area in Gauteng on Monday afternoon.

According to reports, the incident occurred at approximately 15:10 when a motorist pulled over to the side of the road. A white Volkswagen Jetta stopped in front of him, and three armed suspects exited the vehicle. One of the men, brandishing a firearm, ordered the victim to exit his car.

However, before the suspects could proceed with the hijacking, they noticed a police vehicle approaching. Panicking, they instructed the victim to leave and quickly fled back into their car. Nearby officers were immediately alerted and pursued the suspects, successfully intercepting and apprehending all three individuals.

A search of the suspects led to the recovery of a firearm loaded with eight rounds of ammunition. The men failed to provide a valid explanation for possessing the weapon.

The suspects were arrested and face charges of attempted hijacking, as well as possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Authorities are conducting further investigations to determine if the suspects are linked to other criminal activities. The recovered firearm will undergo ballistic testing to establish whether it was used in previous crimes.

Major-General Samuel Thine, District Commissioner of Tshwane, commended the officers for their rapid response and dedication to maintaining community safety.

“Such decisive action by our officers demonstrates our commitment to combating crime and protecting citizens,” said Major-General Thine.

Police have urged motorists to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.

The investigation is ongoing.
