Police can not control protests

Die Vryburger

It is becoming increasingly apparent that the country is on the verge of anarchy as it becomes clear that the police do not even have the ability to maintain law and order.

Protests against informal settlements led to streets in Bramley, Johannesburg being blocked with burning tires and stones. Police had to once again use rubber bullets to disperse the protesters.

Residents complain about the erection of shacks in the area. Johannesburg City Council declared that they did not have rights to remove the squatters.

The R59 highway in the area of Meyerton has for several days been closed due to protest action. Motorists have to use alternative routes, which are often even more dangerous. The police cannot get the roads open again.

The N1 north of Pretoria was closed for a while at Hammanskraal after protesters blocked the road. Motorists were advised to use alternative routes on radio stations’ traffic reports, while there are no real alternative routes because the state does not expand or maintain alternative routes.
