
South African Police Service (SAPS) officers arrested one suspect and recovered approximately 10 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of R3 million, during an intelligence-driven operation conducted on 31 May 2026 in Diepsloot.
The operation was jointly executed by Counter Narcotics Crime Intelligence, the West Rand Tactical Response Team, and the West Rand K9 Unit. Acting on verified intelligence regarding two individuals allegedly dealing in narcotics, officers identified and searched a premises in the area. During the search, a black refuse bag concealed beneath a mattress was discovered, containing the suspected crystal meth.
A 35-year-old man present at the scene was arrested on charges of possession of drugs. He is scheduled to appear before the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on 01 June 2026.
Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Gauteng, welcomed the successful operation and commended the involved units.
“We remain committed to removing drugs from our streets and holding those responsible accountable. Drug peddling will not be tolerated in our province,” said Lt Gen Mthombeni.
The recovery underscores ongoing law enforcement efforts to disrupt illicit drug distribution networks and mitigate the impact of substance abuse on communities across the West Rand district.
