Police arrest a bogus cop at Alexandra Magistrate's Court

A 41-year-old man was arrested at Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 25 February 2021 for fraud and impersonating a police officer. It is reported that the suspect, who called himself a police Captain, approached a man accused of murder and promised to make the docket disappear, at a fee, so that he can walk free.

The victim alleged that he was called by “Captain Malebane” during October 2020 who told him that with R5000-00 he can make his case disappear in court. The victim allegedly paid “Captain Malebane” R3200 and the balance was to be paid later.

The matter was reported to Johannesburg Special Crime Investigation Unit that immediately started with the investigation. On Thursday 25 February 2021, police pounced on the suspect at Alexandra Magistrate’s Court after receiving R1000 entrapment money from the victim.

On further investigation it was established that the suspect from Alexandra is not a police officer. People who became victims of such a crime are urged to call Colonel Solomon Mabasa on 071 481 2970.

The suspect is expected to appear at Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 26 February 2021.

Members of the public are cautioned not to give money to any person calling himself a police officer, especially for exchange of favour. Such conduct constitute a criminal offence to both parties.

Anyone who witness such behaviour should report it to the nearest police station or crime stop on 08600 10111.
