Law enforcement authorities have arrested two suspects, including a traffic police officer and a Home Affairs official, in connection with an alleged kidnapping, fraud, and extortion syndicate targeting undocumented immigrants.
The Arrests
According to reports, one suspect was apprehended in Marshalltown, Johannesburg, while the other was arrested at the Tshwane Home Affairs office. A vehicle believed to have been used in the crimes was also seized.
The Alleged Crimes
Deputy Provincial Commissioner briefed reporters, revealing that the suspects—part of a larger group of seven men and one woman—posed as police officers to detain a victim under false pretenses.
The victim, an undocumented immigrant, was allegedly taken to a police station where she was questioned about her immigration status before being detained. Authorities claim her belongings, including a large sum of money and a cellphone, were stolen and not recorded in police registers.
The following day, she was reportedly taken to the airport and instructed to leave the country. However, an investigation led by the Provincial Organized Crime Unit uncovered the scheme, resulting in today’s arrests.
Charges and Further Investigations
The suspects face charges of kidnapping, theft, malicious damage to property, and fraud. Authorities confirmed that more arrests are expected, with one suspect already in custody on unrelated charges.
The Deputy Provincial Commissioner urged other potential victims to come forward, indicating that this syndicate may have been operating for some time, primarily targeting foreign nationals running businesses in the area.
Home Affairs Responds
A Home Affairs spokesperson commended the joint operation, stating that the department has “zero tolerance” for corruption within its ranks.
Ongoing Developments
This remains a developing story, with authorities vowing to dismantle the entire syndicate.
