Operation ‘O Kae Molao’ took to the streets of Soweto and other areas in Gauteng resulted to the arrest of over 300 suspects on Wednesday and Thursday 27 June 2019. The suspects were arrested for serious and violent crimes that include murder, armed robbery, fraud, assault, rape, car hijacking, possession of stolen motor vehicle and possession of drugs.

The multi-disciplinary operation was led by the Gauteng Provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Elias Mawela supported by Premier of Gauteng Mr David Makhura and the MEC for Community Safety in Gauteng Ms Faith Mazibuko. The operation included the tracing of wanted suspects, raiding of hostels and illegal liquor outlets, roadblocks as well as stop and search.

The detectives were able to traced and arrest more than 250 suspects that have been on the run after committing serious and violent crimes. One hundred and sixty six of these suspects were arrested in Soweto including suspect arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm and cash of an amount of R40 000 seized, while 118 were arrested in Ekurhuleni.

While raiding the Nancefield hostel, police arrested suspects for dealing in illicit drugs, possession of hijacked motor vehicle, dagga and ammunition was confiscated. Roadblocks were conducted at the major roads of Soweto where 18 vehicles were impounded for being unroadworthy, eight more vehicles were discontinued and one suspect was arrested after he was found with suspected stolen vehicle.

Furthermore police of Carletonville and Khutsong in West Rand arrested suspects for various crimes such as possession of drugs, stolen property and dangerous weapons were seized More than 60 illegal immigrants were arrested. Illegal liquor outlets and scrap yard were closed as operation ‘O kae Molao’ spread throughout the province.

In an effort to fight the scourge of drugs, police arrested a man in Eersterust Tshwane, after he was found in possession of drugs and undisclosed amount of cash that he failed to account for.

The arrested suspects will appear at various Magistrates Court in due course.
