On 30 September 2020, the South African Police Service National Investigation Unit resorting under the Division Detective Services has secured a combined 76-year imprisonment for two men who had been charged with attempted murder subsequent to an incident of airport following which occurred in Oaklands on 2 February 2017.
It was reported that Kenneth Ngwenya and Eve Ndlovu followed the victim who had just collected his sister from O R Tambo International Airport to Oaklands in Johannesburg. When the pair arrived home the family was approached by two armed men who commanded them to lay on the ground while the men robbed them of their personal belongings. A shot went off, hitting the father on his chest and the men fled the scene.
The investigation was taken over by the Detectives at National Investigation Unit and eight days later, on 10 February 2017, the Detectives traced Ndlovu and Ngwenya to Norwood where they were arrested and charged with attempted murder, aggravated robbery as well as possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
During 2017/2018 financial year, the incidents of motorists being followed from the airport and robbed at their destination started to spike. The joint operational team at O R Tambo International airport enhanced its interventions both proactively and reactively and since then, these type of incidents started to show a steady decline with no cases reported in the last few months.
The conviction and sentencing of these two men will serve as a huge deterrent to other such would be criminals.
