A violent attack targeting e-hailing vehicles at Maponya Mall in Soweto on Wednesday evening has left one person dead and two others injured. Authorities suspect the incident may be linked to ongoing taxi-related violence in the region.
According to police reports, four unidentified assailants approached an e-hailing driver at the mall’s entrance and opened fire before setting his vehicle alight. A nearby vehicle was also shot at, with its driver sustaining injuries while attempting to flee. A passerby was also struck by gunfire during the attack.
Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi of the South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that one victim—believed to be an e-hailing driver—was fatally shot and set ablaze inside his car. The two injured individuals were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, though their current conditions remain unknown.
SAPS and Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers are investigating the incident, with cases of murder, attempted murder (two counts), and arson opened for further investigation.
“At this stage, the suspects have not been identified, and the scene is still being processed,” said Colonel Nevhuhulwi. “We are working to gather all essential evidence.”
The attack has raised concerns over escalating tensions between traditional taxi operators and e-hailing services. Authorities have urged witnesses to come forward as investigations continue.
This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
