A newborn baby boy was found dead in a field at the corner of Shari and Shaba streets in Lenasia, Johannesburg, on Saturday, Gauteng paramedics said.

“Paramedics from the ER24 Johannesburg South branch were alerted to the scene after a member of public had noticed the body among some refuse,” ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said.

“Upon arrival, paramedics found the body partially wrapped in a bloodstained shirt and plastic bag. The shirt and bag were quickly removed as paramedics assessed the patient. Unfortunately, the child had already succumbed to his injuries. Nothing more could be done for him and he was declared dead on [the] scene.”

No further details were available and local authorities were on the scene to investigate, Meiring said.
