The year has just begun, and unions are arranging their first strikes over wage disputes.

Nehawu has announced that all their members will be suspended at Unisa. Yesterday they already barred the entrance to the Sunnyside campus in Pretoria. They demand a 10% increase for all workers. Unisa’s offer of 7% increase, which is already higher than the official inflation rate, was rejected by Nehawu.

Members of the trade union are already striking at the Durban University of Technology where they are demanding a 12% increase.

It has a disruption to the registration process at universities, which will soon have to open their doors for the academic year.

Meanwhile, hundreds of workers from the pharmacy group Dis-Chem have also begun striking and claiming bonuses and the recognition of their trade union, Nupsaw.
