The Management in Gauteng SAPS has welcomed the sentence handed down to three accused for the murder of an off duty police officer.

It was on 26 October 2019, when the 36-year-old police officer, stationed at Mabopane, met his untimely death. The victim was accompanying his girlfriend’s sister and cousin to buy a second hand car in Soshanguwe.

The three were accosted by two unknown men while waiting on the side of the road to get directions from the seller.

The police officer, who was the driver at the time, was shot dead while the suspects fled with the other victim and robbed her from the cash she carried to pay for the vehicle.

Through a thorough investigation conducted by Constable Keorapetse Segokodi of Tshwane Trio Crimes, it was established that the robbery was planned by the cousin who was subsequently arrested for murder, kidnapping and robbery.

During the investigation two more suspects were also arrested.

All three accused aged 30, 33 and 48 years respectively, were found guilty on all the charges and were sentenced as follows;

Count one: murder 15 years
Count two: robbery 10 years
Count three: robbery 10 years
Count four: kidnapping 5 years

Count one and four will be combined to 20 years while count two and three will run concurrently.

Constable Keorapetse Segokodi is applauded for his hard work and meticulous investigation that ensured that the perpetrators are convicted.
