A tornado on Monday evening left 50 houses damaged in Ennerdale, South of Johannesburg, the Johannesburg Emergency Services (EMS) said on Tuesday.

This tornado hit the city after days of bad weather that culminated in flash floods that led to the deaths of six people and a three-year-old girl being swept away by the Juskskei river in Alexandra on Wednesday last week. The search for the girl continues.

Spokesperson for EMS Nana Radebe said the search for little Everite Chauke will resume near the Lion Park.

EMS spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi said three houses were so badly damaged and they were left without walls and roofs.

As many as 47 houses were partially damaged when the tornado hit Ennerdale. One person was injured.

Mulaudzi said affected residents have not yet been provided with alternative shelter.

“We are meeting with various stakeholders to determine whether there will be shelter for the displaced families. Shelter will be provided only if they need it” he said.

Development MMC for City of Johannesburg Richard Funzela Ngobeni will visit the area on Tuesday to assess the damage cause by the tornado.

The EMS is at scene to continue the assessment to ensure that all affected members of the community are assisted.

Malaudzi has urged residents to report missing and injured residents to officials.

President Jacob Zuma will visit Alexandra to assess the effects of the storms. MEC for Social Development Mayathula-Khoza, visited the area on Monday.
