More than 40 arrested during Tshwane unrest

Gauteng police have arrested more than 40 people between last night and this morning following incidents of unrests and protests in and around Tshwane.

The arrests were made in Atteridgeville, Hercules, Mabopane, Soshanguve and Mamelodi. They will appear in court soon. They have been charged with public violence, theft and possession of stolen property. Two people have also been shot and killed following looting at Mamelodi.

Gauteng provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Deliwe De Lange said the lawlessness happening in various areas in Tshwane will not be tolerated. She said those found breaking the law under the pretext of protesting will be arrested immediately.

Incidents of protesting and looting continued in some areas and the situation remains tense in others. General De Lange said police are on the ground and are there to protect communities. She appealed to communities to be calm. Those that are sending false messages are causing unnecessary panic to the people.
