Police in Gauteng arrested more than 2000 suspects during weekend operations, 146 of those were arrested for crime related to gender based violence.
The detectives braved the rainy weather and worked over night on Friday 10 February 2023, to trace the suspects who have been on the run after committing serious and violent crimes like murder, attempted murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, rape and armed robbery.
The ongoing and effective weekend Operation O Kae Molao was conducted in all five districts in Gauteng, resulting in the recovery of suspected stolen and hijacked motor vehicles.
Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, led the Operation O Kae Molao in Tsakane, Ekurhuleni District, where 18 people were arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol, 15 people were arrested for possession and dealing in drugs while 18 undocumented foreign nationals were taken in, to be processed by officials from Department of Home Affairs.
Other high density police operations conducted in Ekurhuleni District this weekend have resulted in the arrest of 622 suspects for various crimes.
Tshwane District Commissioner, Major General Azwinndini Nengovhela, led integrated weekend operations in Tshwane, where more than 593 suspects were arrested after committing various crimes.
The West Rand District Commissioner, Major General Fred Kekana, led weekend operations that included Operation O Kae Molao in Krugersdorp. During these high density operations, 176 people were arrested for crime ranging from murder, armed robbery, car hijacking, rape and kidnapping.
More than 205 suspects were arrested in Sedibeng during weekend operations that were led by District Commissioner, Major General Zodwa Molefe. Suspects were arrested for crimes that include assault, possession of suspected stolen property, murder, kidnapping, attempted murder and possession of drugs.
Major General Max Masha, Johannesburg District Commissioner, led multidisciplinary Operation O Kae Molao in Johannesburg over the weekend. Four hundred and sixty-six suspects were arrested after committing crimes ranging from murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, fraud and theft.
Suspects are expected to appear before various Magistrate’s Court from Monday, 13 February 2023.
