Mob justice: Business robbery suspect killed, set alight, Soweto

Police have condemned an incident of mob justice where a man was attacked and killed after community members apprehended him on suspicion of being behind a business robbery.

It is reported that a tuckshop owner in Mapetla, Soweto was on Wednesday evening, 30 October 2019, accosted by two unknown males who robbed him at gunpoint of his cellphone, liquor and an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspects allegedly shot at the businessman multiple times.

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead.

It is further alleged that community members chased after the suspects, apprehended one and killed him by setting him alight. Police recovered an unlicensed firearm with no serial number, a cell phone and a wallet allegedly belonging to the tuckshop owner.

The second suspect is still at large and police have appealed to anyone who can assist with information of his identity and whereabouts, to contact Moroka SAPS or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

The SAPS has also recently launched an app, MySAPS that the public can use to give tip-offs anonymously.

The public is warned to desist from taking the law into their hands. No amount of anger can justify any act of criminality.
