Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) said on Tuesday that a manhunt had been launched for the driver of the bus that collided with another car on Monday night on the M1 South in Johannesburg leaving more than 30 passengers injured.

The bus driver fled the scene after the bus, which was travelling to Cape Town from Park Station, collided with a vehicle and rolled over on the highway.

JMPD spokesperson, Wayne Minnaar, on Tuesday morning said: “There is a search for the driver of the Marcopolo bus who fled the scene last night where there was a major backlog on the M1 South”.

Minnaar added: “Traffic had to be diverted … 32 passengers sustained minor injuries and four others suffered serious injuries.”

Initially reports placed the number of injured at 41.

On Monday night, emergency services said they attended to 41 injured people. Paramedics immediately set up a triage area and began to assess the injured.

“Only 41 of the bus’ 70 plus occupants were found to have been injured in the collision, with four of them sustaining moderate to serious injuries,” EMER-G-MED said in a statement.

The passengers were treated on the scene before being transported by ambulance services to nearby hospitals.

Minnaar said the bus belonged to Atlantic Charters and Tours, a Cape Town-based coach transportation services company.

Atlantic Tours were not immediately available for comment.
