A man was arrested after he was found in possession of 7,000 mandrax tablets concealed as dog food at a hotel in Bedfordview, east of Johannesburg, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.
Police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza said police received a tip-off about drug dealing in the area and kept an eye on the hotel parking lot on Monday night.
“After sometime, at around 10pm, a BMW arrived. Members pounced on the owner and searched the vehicle. They found two big bags of dog food sealed, inside the bags were seven bags each containing 1,000 mandrax tablets,” said Kweza.
The man then took police to his home in Walkerville where they found chemicals and equipment used to produce drugs.
The 46-year-old man is expected to appear in court soon on charges of drug possession.
