A man is in a critical condition after being attacked and shot twice, by armed robbers on a smallholding near Vereeniging.

Raymond Forbes (64) is fighting for his life in the intensive care unit of the Sebokeng Hospital, where he is attached to a ventilator.

Wendy Barnard, Forbes’ daughter, told Maroela Media that on Thursday night while her parents and grandmother slept, and in the early morning, hours heard a sound inside the house and woke up.

Forbes went to investigate and one of the attackers ran toward him. “They broke the burglar proofing on one of the windows to open the window and managed to get in and open the sliding door to gain access into the house,” Barnard said. “The attacker fired at my father, but missed and my father rushed toward him.”

“They wrestled and another suspect entered the house and shot my father twice.”

Forbes was wounded in the back and arm and immediately collapsed on the floor. According to Barnard, the attackers pushed her grandmother, who is in her 80s, into a room, held a gun to her head, and ordered her to remain quiet. The suspects then went to Barnard’s mother, Hester (60), and forced her to open the safe for them.

The three or four attackers fled with jewelry, electronics, mobile phones, and the Forbes couple’s vehicle.
