Man arrested in connection with Susan Rohde’s murder

A 47-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder of Susan Rohde who was found dead at Spier Wine Estate in Stellenbosch a month ago.

Police spokesperson FC van Wyk said the man was arrested shortly before 7am on Tuesday morning in Johannesburg.

He refused to name the suspect, but its been reported that Rohde’s husband. Jason Rohde, has been arrested and is being held at the Randburg police station.

Van Wyk said the arrested man would appear in the Stellenbosch Magistrate’s Court in the next two days.

Susan Rohde, wife of property mogul Jason Rohde, was found with the cord of a straightening iron around her neck in the bathroom of the hotel room she was staying in on July 24.

The Sotheby’s International Realty CEO claimed at the time that he had tried to open the bathroom door and when he couldn’t he called hotel staff to assist him.

They found his wife with the cord around her neck and were unable to revive her. Police believed it was a suicide, but it became a murder investigation after post mortem results indicated she had been strangled.

The couple had been staying at Spier for a company function, and its been widely reported that the two had an argument before the murder.

Rohde’s lawyer Daniel Witz could not be reached for comment.
