A 39-year-old suspect is in custody after members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) uncovered a cache of unlicensed firearms and ammunition during a routine operation on Wednesday evening.

The arrest occurred at approximately 18:45 on Wednesday, 22 October 2025, in Protea Glen Ext 28. According to police reports, members of the Protea Trio Task Team and the Crime Prevention Unit were conducting a stop and search operation when they intercepted a silver Mercedes-Benz that was not displaying any license plates.

Upon searching the vehicle, officers made a significant discovery. The recovered items include:

  • Four (4) AK-47 rifles

  • Ten (10) AK-47 magazines

  • 329 live rounds of AK-47 ammunition

  • 21 live rounds of R5 rifle ammunition

The suspect was immediately arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. He is expected to be formally charged and appear before the Protea Magistrate’s Court in the coming days.

Police have confirmed that an investigation into the matter is ongoing.
