The FF Plus requests the MEC for Cooperative Governance (COGTA) in Gauteng, Mr Lebogang Maile, to immediately remove the head administrator of the Tshwane Metro, Mr Mpho Nawa, from his office due to his alleged violation of the lockdown regulations.
In contravention of the lockdown regulations, Nawa advertised a public meeting of so-called veterans and elders (“Struggle Veterans and Elders Stakeholder Engagement”) and he allegedly hosted this meeting on Thursday 23 April 2020, even though the regulations clearly prohibit all municipalities from holding any meetings, including consultation processes, within the 21 days of lockdown or the extension thereof.
On 5 March 2020, the Gauteng Premier placed the Tshwane Metro under administration and later appointed Nawa as administrator of the Metro after the EFF and ANC Councillors had repeatedly disrupted the council meetings and operations of the multiparty coalition, of which the FF Plus is a partner.
After the disruptive behavior of the ANC Councillors, this step by the ANC Premier comes down to a sheer disregard for the South African Constitution and is nothing but an attempt to get control of the Metro in an unlawful manner after the ANC lost the Metro in 2016.
In the interim, a ruling is expected from the Pretoria High Court after the DA submitted an urgent application to oppose the administration order of the Metro in March 2020.
The FF Plus will lodge a complaint against administrator Nawa and will hold both the MEC and the Premier accountable to fulfill their oversight role.
