Lockdown: Gauteng police seize 189 383 litres of alcohol, what about important matters?

The Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Faith Mazibuko, confirmed in response to a written question by the FF Plus that the police seized 189 383 litres of illicit alcohol during the Covid-19 lockdown.

It includes 5 427 litres of mixed brews and 5 791 litres of home-made beer, which was destroyed immediately. The rest of the alcoholic beverages (178 163 litres) are kept under lock and key on police premises and will be destroyed as soon as the court cases related to it have been finalised.

According to the MEC, 889 cases were opened for the illegal possession of alcohol and only 108 have been concluded because the accused paid acknowledgement-of-guilt fines.

The ban on the sale of alcohol during the lockdown did not only damage the economy, but it also puts more pressure on courts and takes up precious time that should rather be used to settle more important matters.
