The controversial and Afrikaner-hostile Gauteng MEC for education, Panyazu Lesufi, turned to the courts and submitted an application against Overvaal High School after the school refused to take 55 additional pupils on the basis of their language policy.

The department is struggling to place another 31 000 pupils before the schools reopen.

Overvaal is willing to take Afrikaans-speaking pupils, but Lesufi regards it as discrimination.

The school’s war has just begun with the department’s proposed legislative amendment that will shorten powers of governing bodies.

Observers point out that the promise of the NP’s “own schools” promise is spinning into a full circle. Parents still relying on “our Head” and “our governing body” are in for a shock.

CVO schools are expected to receive an increase in applications where parents no longer accept multicultural education by multicultural staff.
