A high-impact crime prevention operation was conducted on Monday, 12 May 2025, in the Marry Me informal settlement under the Soshanguve policing precinct. The operation, aimed at curbing criminal activity and reinforcing visible policing in identified hotspot areas, resulted in the dismantling of illegal electricity connections and the seizure of stolen transformers worth an estimated R800,000.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) led the operation in collaboration with the Tshwane Metro Electricity Department and the Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department (TMPD). Authorities removed numerous illegal power connections, which have been linked to frequent electrical fires, electrocution hazards, and overloading of the municipal grid—often causing prolonged outages that disrupt critical services, including clinics, schools, and local businesses.

Major-General Samuel ThineDistrict Commissioner of Tshwane, praised the operation’s success, emphasizing the importance of interdepartmental cooperation in combating crime. “This operation demonstrates what can be achieved through coordinated efforts and strategic planning. We commend all SAPS members and external stakeholders for their professionalism and commitment to ensuring safer communities,” he said.

Illegal electricity connections remain a persistent challenge in informal settlements, posing severe risks to residents and infrastructure. Authorities have urged the public to report such activities, as they not only endanger lives but also hinder legitimate service delivery efforts.

The operation underscores the Tshwane District’s ongoing commitment to crime prevention, infrastructure protection, and enhanced service delivery through collaborative law enforcement strategies.
