Johannesburg Water has announced that critical infrastructure maintenance by Rand Water will disrupt water supply across several areas from today (yesterday) until Wednesday, July 2. Residents in affected regions may experience low water pressure or complete outages during this period.

Areas Impacted

The maintenance will affect the Eikenhof and Zwartkopjes bulk water supply systems, which serve large parts of the city. Affected suburbs include:

  • Soweto

  • Randburg

  • Roodepoort

  • Lenasia

  • Crown Gardens

  • Commando System (Brixton, Hursthill, Crosby)

  • Aeroton

  • Naturena

Water Tankers Deployed

To mitigate the impact, Johannesburg Water has assured residents that water tankers will be deployed to all affected areas. The utility’s spokesperson, Nombuso Shabalala, confirmed that alternative water supply will continue until systems fully recover, which could take two to five days after maintenance concludes.

Purpose of Maintenance

Shabalala explained that the maintenance is aimed at improving plant reliability and upgrading aging infrastructure. “This is a critical intervention by Rand Water, our bulk supplier, to ensure long-term improvements in water supply stability,” she said.

Recovery Timeline

While maintenance officially ends on Wednesday, full water restoration may take several more days due to gradual system recovery. Residents are encouraged to store water in advance and use it sparingly.

Long-Term Infrastructure Challenges

Johannesburg’s water infrastructure remains aged, requiring consistent upgrades. Shabalala acknowledged concerns but emphasized that planned maintenance, combined with Johannesburg Water’s own repairs, should reduce future disruptions.

Funding Not a Major Issue

Despite infrastructure challenges, Shabalala confirmed that budget allocations from the city are in place to support necessary upgrades.

Residents are urged to follow updates from Johannesburg Water and report persistent outages to their ward councilors.
